If your goal is to build confidence as well as knowledge, become part of the existing team, or build your own hugely successful tutoring business, read on:
It is estimated that around 1 in 4 children in the UK now have a private tutor. In part this will be due to growing class sizes and frustration with the current education system. This displeasure is magnified for families when their child is one of the 353,000 0–17-year-olds in the UK living with some form of Special educational need. It is estimated that this accounts for 2.5% of all the children here in the UK.
The rise of children who are struggling with the mainstream approach justifies why we need to be more flexible with our approach to supporting their learning. We need to offer support that is suitable to their learning style. Textbooks and worksheets only get us so far.
Not being one of the masses means that we can support you as an individual not as a statistic that goes through the books each month
I was talking to a friend the other day and I pointed out
that we can’t compete with the big guns. We don’t have the longevity that they have. But because we are smaller, we can treat people as individuals and give them the personal support they need. Not just a part of a generic system. We can offer something much better.
Her response: That is what you should tell people. That's what makes you stand out!
“If a child can’t learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn”
I’m not sure who first said that quote, but I think it is one
that many people resonate with. Maybe because of your own experiences or maybe
because of the experience that someone you care about has encountered.
When I started Clara James Tutoring it was just me. I had no knowledge about running a
business (apart from swinging on my dad’s office chair during the school
holidays) and although I had worked in various aspects of education; I had no
knowledge about what was expected of a tutor, so a friend and I brainstormed
what we would expect from a tutor for our own children.
From that Clara James Tutoring was born. The business has
gone from being something that was supposed to help me earn some extra income
as a newly single mum, to being a team of 9 tutors in our local area. I have
gone from being painfully shy with a deep sense of inadequacy to being so much
more confident with a huge pride in what we do and what we have achieved.
I know that if I can do it, you can do it too. And that’s my goal. To help you
build a tutoring business that you are proud of. That helps so many children
build not just their knowledge, but also their confidence. To make learning an
enjoyable experience. So that you want to shout from the chandeliers about what
you do, and others are there with you, shouting about you and what an amazing
impact you have made on their child.
