The Franchise I Refuse to Build

When people think about franchises, they often imagine a huge operations manual.

Every process documented.

Every lesson standardised.

Every tutor expected to follow the same system.

On paper, that sounds sensible.

After all, consistency matters.

But the more I've thought about building the Clara James franchise, the more I've realised there is one type of franchise I simply refuse to build.

I don't want to build a business where all the ideas start with me.

I don't want to sit in an office creating resources in isolation, sending them out to tutors and assuming they'll work for every child they meet.

Because if I've learnt one thing over the last fourteen years, it's this:

Children are wonderfully different.

Some need pictures.

Some need stories.

Some need movement.

Some need games.

Some need quiet.

Some need challenge.

Some need reassurance.

Some need to understand why before they can understand how.

No two children are exactly the same.

If that's true for children, surely it's true for tutors as well.

Every tutor brings different experiences.

Different strengths.

Different ways of explaining concepts.

Different ideas.

Different life experiences.

Why would I want to lose all of that by expecting everyone to teach exactly like me?

I wouldn't.

In fact, I believe that would weaken the very thing we're trying to build.

From "Best Practice" to "Better Practice"

People often talk about sharing best practice.

I prefer to think of it differently.

I want us to create better practice together.

Imagine a tutor discovers a brilliant way of explaining fractions to a child who has struggled for years.

Another tutor creates a game that suddenly makes spellings click.

Someone else develops a strategy that helps an anxious child feel safe enough to answer questions again.

Those ideas shouldn't stay with one tutor.

They should become part of the collective knowledge of the entire franchise.

Every success.

Every breakthrough.

Every creative explanation.

Every lesson learned.

Together, they make all of us better.

The Child in Front of You

One of the phrases you'll hear me say time and time again is this:

Teach the child in front of you.

Not the diagnosis.

Not the label.

Not the worksheet.

Not the lesson plan.

The child.

Because today's confident child might arrive feeling overwhelmed.

Today's anxious child might be ready for a challenge.

Today's reluctant writer might suddenly want to write three pages about dinosaurs or football.

Children change.

Our teaching needs to be flexible enough to change with them.

That's why I don't believe there is one perfect resource.

There is only the right resource for this child, at this moment.

A Community, Not Just a Franchise

When people join Clara James, I don't want them to feel like they've bought a business in a box.

I want them to feel they've joined a community.

A place where asking questions is encouraged.

Where sharing ideas is celebrated.

Where challenges can be discussed openly.

Where nobody feels they have to pretend they have all the answers.

Because none of us do.

Including me.

One of the greatest lessons I've learnt in business is that leadership isn't about having every answer.

It's about creating an environment where the best answers can emerge.

Sometimes they'll come from me.

Sometimes they'll come from someone who has been tutoring for twenty years.

Sometimes they'll come from someone who joined us six months ago and sees something the rest of us have missed.

And that's exactly how I want it to be.

The Future I'm Building

When I first started tutoring, my goal was simply to help one child.

Then another.

Then another.

Today, my vision is much bigger.

Not because I want a bigger business.

But because I want more children to experience that wonderful moment when they realise:

"I can do this."

I believe that happens when we stop trying to make children fit our teaching...

...and instead shape our teaching around the child.

That's the culture I want every Clara James tutor to be part of.

Not a culture where knowledge flows in one direction.

But one where we learn from one another every single day.

Because when tutors keep learning...

Children keep growing.

And if we can build a franchise where every tutor feels valued, every idea is welcomed, and every child is seen as an individual...

Then together, we won't just be building a successful tutoring business.

We'll be changing the way tutoring is experienced, one child at a time.

For the past 20+ years I have been a firm believer that learning should be an enjoyable experience. I appreciate that traditionally education has revolved around worksheets, textbooks, listening to teachers. But a grounding in early years and working with children who had a variety of learning styles from I learned that it is an individual activity that is personal to all of us. We don’t all learn in the same way. Our influences, our experiences, our capabilities all influence how we retain information. But through it all, I believe that if we can make it enjoyable and engaging, they will want to participate. With participation comes practice which in turn boosts skill and confidence. With an increase in skill and confidence comes a willingness to have a go. This in turn leads to more practice which leads to a positive spiral of success. The moral, we need to make learning fun, engaging, use a range of techniques.
