Become a tutor online

If you had asked me about online tutoring at the beginning of 2020, my attitude would have been very different.

However, with the onslaught of an international pandemic online tutoring became a necessity for many tutors and students.

As a bit of background about myself, I created Clara James Tutoring back in 2012. One of our USP’s (unique selling points) was that every lesson was tailor made and would take place in the comfort of the student’s own home. I believed (and still do) that if the child is in an environment where they feel confident, they are in a better mindset to learn.

March 2019, when government announced that the country was going into complete lockdown with almost immediate effect, I had two choices:

Option 1: Close my business

Option2: Adapt and embrace a new normal.

I chose option 2 and it has possibly been one of the best business decisions I have ever made.

Why?

Because when the country isn’t in lockdown we can now offer a two tear approach. A premier service where we still travel to the student’s home. In addition a cheaper service where we can still offer a tailor made, bespoke lesson but at a reduced cost.

If you are considering becoming an online tutor, I would recommend you use zoom. Providing you are only working with one child at a time, your lessons can last for as long as you desire. And it is completely free of charge. If you want to use the free service and work with groups of children, you may need to consider keeping your lessons shorter.

With zoom, you can share each other’s screens, annotate the screen and it has proven to be 100% reliable.

(I hope I’m not jinxing things here)

Working online also means you can support students who live in more rural areas to whom it would be difficult for you to travel to. Or those that would struggle to get to you. If you live in a larger city where travelling between homes could also be impractical. The time it would take traveling between homes needs to be considered. Becoming an online tutor again offers a practical alternative.

With working as an online tutor you can inevitably support more students.

During the winter months, online tutoring also offers the advantage of not having to cancel lessons if the weather is bad and you are unable to travel. It removes the risks of driving on snow and ice, thick fog, and flooding.

However, you will need to ensure you live in an area with a good internet connection and that you’re not prone to power cuts. Either of these would make your lessons seem unprofessional and you unreliable. This could jeopardise your reputation and your chances of becoming a successful tutor.
